Removing the top of a salt grinder is typically done for cleaning, maintenance, or refilling. Below are general instructions for safe and easy removal.
Empty the salt reservoirTurn the grinder upside down over a bowl and gently tap the body to pour out any remaining salt. This prevents spills or blockages inside the mechanism during disassembly.
Loosen the top
Most salt grinders feature a screw-on top, connected to the body with threads.
If the lid is stuck, wrap a rubber band around it for better grip, then twist counterclockwise to open.
If it still won’t turn, place a cloth over the edge and gently tap with a screwdriver handle to loosen buildup caused by salt clumps.
Remove the grinding mechanism (for deeper cleaning or repairs)Once the top is unscrewed, you will see the ceramic or metal grinding burr underneath. Carefully lift it out for thorough cleaning.
Make sure the grinder is completely dry before handling to prevent rust on internal metal parts.
For dual-chamber grinders (salt and pepper), only disassemble the salt side to avoid breaking the seal on the pepper chamber.
Most household salt grinder tops are threaded. Some premium or specialty models use a snap-on design, which can be gently pried loose with a flathead screwdriver or pry tool.
If you are unsure about your specific model, consult the product manual or contact the manufacturer for model-specific guidance.
