Follow these steps to use your manual pepper grinder safely, efficiently, and extend its service life.
Wipe the exterior with a dry cloth to remove dust or debris.
Check for leftover pepper particles inside; clean with a soft brush if needed.
Unscrew the top or base (some models require removing the adjustment knob) to access the grinding chamber.
Only add dry whole peppercorns. Do not use pre-ground pepper or moist peppercorns, as they can clog the grinding mechanism.
Fill to about 3/4 full to ensure smooth grinding.
Locate the adjustment knob on the top or bottom:
Rotate clockwise for a finer grind (ideal for sauces, scrambled eggs).
Rotate counterclockwise for a coarser grind (perfect for steaks, salads, roasts).
Test grind by turning the handle a few times and fine-tune to your preferred texture.
Hold the middle or bottom of the grinder firmly with one hand, and turn the handle or knob smoothly with the other.
Avoid excessive force to prevent damage to ceramic or stainless steel burrs.
Grind directly over dishes for better portion control.
Refill peppercorns when the grinder feels light or output slows down.
Wipe clean with a dry cloth after use. Do not submerge in water to avoid rusting burrs or warping wooden bodies.
Periodically grind 1–2 tablespoons of raw rice to remove internal oil and residue.
Peppercorn Selection: Use fresh, aromatic whole black, white, or mixed peppercorns.
Storage: Keep in a cool, dry area away from stoves and direct sunlight.
Material Care:
Wooden grinders: Occasionally apply food-grade mineral oil to prevent cracking.
Stainless steel grinders: Corrosion-resistant, but avoid prolonged contact with salt unless designed for salt use.
Dual-purpose salt and pepper grinders, often labeled as salt & pepper mills, usually feature ceramic burrs compatible with both seasonings.
